CARTER, Jimmy -- Former US President

Jimmy Carter, the 39th President of the United States (1977-1981), and the 2002 Nobel Peace Prize laureate, is also the author of the 2006 book Palestine Peace Not Apartheid. Following his presidency, Carter has perhaps best been known as a champion of human rights. Founder of the Carter Center, Carter has traveled around the world, campaigning for human rights and observing elections.

Carter, during his presidency and after, was not known for being particularly critical of Israel or supportive of the Palestinian national struggle. He was the negotiator of the 1978 Camp David Accords, the peace between Egypt and Israel that ensured the return of the Sinai to Egypt. However, Carter was widely criticized throughout the Arab world, and rejected by Palestinian leadership, including the Palestine Liberation Organization, because, as a separate peace, the accords restored relations between Egypt and Israel without addressing Palestinian national rights, the status of the Golan Heights, or other Arab concerns. At the same time, Carter was viewed more favorably in the Arab world than other US presidents.

Ironically, with the release of Palestine Peace Not Apartheid on November 14, 2006, Carter has been widely attacked by pro-Israel pundits, columnists and politicians, at the same time that the title and the subject matter of his book have helped to open additional forums to addressing Palestine in the context of apartheid, and focusing on the crimes of Israeli apartheid.
